A five chapter narrative assessment arc for ages 13 to 16 (Secondary 2 to 4, US Grade 8 and up), written at a Grade 8 to 10 comprehension level. Students take the role of a junior reporter in 1903 and make editorial judgments across the real timeline of powered flight, from ridicule to vindication to the 1969 correction. Resilience thinking is assessed through decisions, not quiz items.
Five signals are tracked: reframing criticism, understanding doubters, staying power, reaching out, and turning it inward. Each signal is probed on a four level depth ladder: Recognize, Explain, Apply, Coach. Items adapt within chapters, stepping up when a student demonstrates a level and down when they struggle. The arc also captures a matched pre and post judgment item (chapters 1 and 4), two transfer probes in unfamiliar domains, three editorial stance decisions that carry forward, one behavioral micro commitment with a follow up check, calibrated confidence ratings, and four written reflections.
Depth level per signal, stance journey, pre to post movement, commitment follow through, and reflection excerpts. It is framed to students as a reflection portfolio, not a grade. In production, written responses are scored against a rubric with AI assistance and surfaced to the teacher; here they appear unscored.
